Pizza Hut made the ultimate typo in an effort to help out a fellow business in Australia.
According to Grub Street, a Pizza Hut in Melbourne, Australia displayed a banner that read “Buy Any 10 Large Pizzas and Get One Free Small Animal.”
Obviously, the campaign didn’t sit well with animal activists and customers alike. After the banner went viral, the company claimed they made a terrible mistake.
A Melbourne, Australia Pizza Hut restaurant says it made a huge mistake by putting up a sign intended to drum up business for a neighboring pet store. The chain restaurant actually advertised a pets-for-pizza giveaway very similar to your coffee shop loyalty card, apparently, with a sign reading “Buy any 10 pizzas and get one free small animal.” It turns out, however, one small and crucial word was left off, and the sign should have read, “Buy any 10 pizzas and get one free small animal kit.”
The sign was left up for two weeks before it was eventually taken down. Pizza Hut issued a statement following the backlash:
It has come to our attention that one of our stores have recently been running a promotion which was not approved by Pizza Hut Australia, nor was condoned in any circumstances.
We would like to sincerely [apologize] to anyone who was offended by this.
Pets Story, the pet store that was also part of the campaign, says they’re embarrassed by the mishap.
Pizza Hut Australia has since apologized for the “thoughtless promotion ever occurring,” and Pets Story, the local shop, is still embarrassed. “There is no way we would give away free animals. We only have four rabbits in our whole entire store,” a spokesperson says.
With all the free promo, maybe Pets Story can find those guinea pigs and rabbits a nice home?
