On Sept. 4, South Carolina State Trooper Sean Groubert opened fire on a black man he pulled over for a seat belt violation.

That shooting and the release of the disturbing dash cam video showing the driver, identified as Levar Jones, being shot for no apparent reason resulted in Groubert’s arrest on Wednesday. He was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

One look at the video backs up those charges.

In the video, you can see Groubert’s cruiser pull up to Jones exiting his SUV at a gas station. Groubert jumps out of his vehicle, asking Jones for his license. When Jones turns around to grab his license, Groubert opens fire, shooting at least three rounds while yelling “get out of the car!”

Jones drops to the ground, telling the trooper that he was just grabbing his license. Groubert can be heard yelling at Jones to “get on the ground!”

The victim can be heard in the background asking Groubert why he was shot. Groubert, asking the man if he was hit, calls for backup.

From The State:

Groubert was booked Wednesday evening at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. He was fired from the patrol last Friday.

Wednesday night, in a hearing at the jail, Magistrate Ethel Brewer set Groubert’s bond at $75,000.

The former trooper faces 20 years in prison if convicted. Jones, who was struck in the hip, is out of the hospital and recuperating.
