A 13-year-old boy described as a “jokester who loved to dance and rap and hang out,” was fatally shot at a playground in Chicago Sunday night.

The teenager, Demureye Macon, tried to run after being asked if he was in a gang, but was struck in his chest, according to his mother, Tawana Macon.

“Why? Why would they do this? It’s senseless,” Macon said Monday morning as she stood surrounded by her siblings, talking through tears. “Quit doing this to these kids. They babies.”

According to his friends and family, Demureye was at the park with his friends on Sunday night. He left to walk a girl to the bus stop, along with another teenager. He was returning when a group came out of the alley and asked if he was affiliated with a gang.

The boy and his friend tried to run but couldn’t get away fast enough.

“My baby wasn’t in no gang,” Macon said.

Police say the shooting happened around 8:35 p.m. in the 6600 block of South Talman in the Marquette Park neighborhood. When police arrived, they pronounced the 13-year-old dead at the scene.

The teen was a 7th grader at Fairfield Elementary Academy and was the oldest of four siblings, his mother said. His modest home was where he and his friends would gather to hang out and, if they weren’t there, they were at the park which they considered a safe zone, said Lavarie Thigpen, 16, and a close friend.

“He was somebody you could be around. He was just a cool person you could be around,” Lavarie said. “He was somebody you could get along with.”

No arrests have been made in the shooting. Our prayers and condolences are with Demureye’s family during this difficult time.
