Multi-talented actor Nate Parker was the guest of a special edition of the No Judgment Zone with BlogXilla to promote his new role in Beyond the Lights, in which he co-stars alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw. The 34-year-old gave Xilla the details on why he accepted the role and what went into making the movie happen.

“It was so much fun. It was so much fun because for one, I trusted my director, and for two, my co-star was next-level talent, next-level beauty, and everything you want. So it was fun because the elements were pure and so well thought out.”

Famous for his charity work, Nate also gave his view on the best way to effect change and what it means to leave a great legacy.

“Social work can’t be once a month at the Boys & Girls Club. You can’t say I want to effect change in my community, so I’m going to go to the Boys & Girls Club every second Sunday of the month. It has to be ingrained in who you are as a person.”

The outspoken actor also gave his view on how Ferguson was mishandled and his upcoming documentary on the tragic shooting of Michael Brown.

“The problem is people don’t want to give up privilege, which is why a lot of people were silent… My whole thing is, if you have a son or a daughter, I don’t care what color you are. The fact that you are not vocal about this is destructive… [The documentary] takes time, so that won’t be out until next year.”

In the meantime however, Parker announced he will be taking part in a movie about Nat Turner, a slave who led the most successful slavery rebellion in history. The film will be titled The Birth of a Nation.

“I’m really excited to tell that story because I feel like revolution is in the air. We need to be reminded of our duty and responsibility to stand,” he said.

Beyond the Lights comes out in theaters November 14. Read more about the film here.
