What has this world come to?

16-year-old Steven Miles has been sentenced to 25 years after stabbing his girlfriend Elizabeth Thomas while in his family’s home this past January. Inspired by the Showtime hit Dexter, the British teenager went on to dismember his girlfriend, before placing the limbs in plastic wrap and storing them behind his desk as the rest of  his girlfriend’s body laid there, covered in a sheet.

His chosen attorney calls this case “chilling, blood-curdling and sustained.” Miles has been diagnosed as autistic and confessed to his family that his alter-ego “Ed” made him do it. An hour after he committed the horrifying murder, he told his sister what he had done with his father’s tree surgery business and showed her the results.

Miles told his attorney that he had a lot of things in common with the main character in “Dexter” and referred to his girlfriend as his “project.” His lawyer had this to say about the young, sick boy:

This was a truly gruesome killing ripped from the pages of a hit TV script. The evidence points to the defendant trying to emulate the actions of the character Dexter, who he idolized. The case is a sad testament to the perils of how young people can become entrenched in modern TV blockbusters involving violence which shockingly led to a copycat killing in real life.

Sadly, Steven showed no remorse during the sentencing. Because he is a minor, he received 25 years in prison. Our prayers go out to both families during this tragic time.
