In a tragic incident that highlights how street harassment can take a deadly turn, a 27-year-old mother in Detroit is dead after she was shot for refusing to give a man her phone number.

Mary “Unique” Spears was attending the funeral of a family member on Detroit’s east side on the day the shooting occurred. The family continued to celebrate the life of the deceased at the American Legion Joe Louis Post No. 375 in Detroit, where they came in contact with a 38-year-old man who family members did not recognize.

A relative, who has asked not to be identified, said the man approached Spears, asking for her name and phone number.

“She said, ‘I have a man I can’t talk to you,'” the relative said.

The harassment continued. When Spears left the post at 2:00 a.m., the man grabbed and hit her. Spears’ fiancé confronted him and a fight broke out.

“He shot her one time,” Spears’ relative said. “And she tried to run. And he shot her two more times in her head.”

Four others were shot in the process, including Spears’ fiancé. They were all sent to the hospital and are expected to survive.

Detroit police say they quickly arrested the suspect after he tried to run. He’s now behind bars, but this family is still living in fear.

“What was on your mind that you could be so evil,” said Belinda Bailey, Spears’ aunt. “Because she said no to you?”

Meanwhile, police in New York City are searching for a suspect who brutally slashed a woman’s neck after she ignored him on the street.

The man, believed to be about 20 years old, approached the 26-year-old victim in the lobby of a Jamaica building after 5 a.m. on Oct. 1, police said.

He tried talking to the woman, and when she turned away, he grabbed her from behind and used some sort of cutting instrument to slash her neck, according to police.

The victim is in critical but stable condition at a NYC-area hospital.

Police say the suspect is 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. They are asking anyone with information about the suspect or the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
