Nothing is as American as apple pie, baseball, #theworldsmosttalkedaboutcouple, and a good ol’ pair of Air Force Ones—at least if you’re Riccardo Tisci, anyway.

When you think about it, he’s kind of right. Whether you love or love to hate Mr. and Mrs. West, you just can’t stop talking about them, and as for the shoes, well, we’ve all stomped around in ’em once or twice à la Nelly. And just before the drop of his third and perhaps final pair of sneakers from his Nike + RT line, Givenchy’s creative director told British GQ all about his friendship with the famous family and his affinity for Air Forces.

Tisci, who signed on to work with the French fashion house back in 2005, has been friends with Kanye for seven years, but admits to not being familiar with the “phenomenon” that was the rise of the Kardashian empire. Despite how the rest of the world already had their minds made up about how they felt (read: disliked) Kim, it wasn’t until the threesome did dinner in Paris when he learned how “very special” she is:

“Then I found out from fashion people that people didn’t like her, people didn’t want anything to do with her. I’m a Leo and Italian and very proud, so I didn’t change my way about them. I invited them to the show, started doing special projects with them, dressing them and I got killed so much. But that’s what you do to be a friend, to be real – you don’t care about what people are saying.”

He also goes on to talk about how they “represent the society of today – an aesthetically beautiful couple, of course, very open, both of them business people,” came to him to do their wedding, and the rest was #theworldsmosttweetedabout wedding history.

Tisci’s third pair of Nike-collaborated kicks go on sale tomorrow, October 16, but he’s been an Air Force One aficionado since the age of 14:

“When Nike called me it sounded so real, so natural and I had to meet them. It’s kind of like the president of America because, after the American flag, it’s one of [those iconic things you] think about when you think of America like Coca-Cola, Marlboro Lights and now Obama.”

As for now, there’s no word on whether or not we can expect to see more in the sneaker line, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed. In the meantime, read Tisci’s entire interview over at British GQ.
