Missouri State Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, who has called for St. Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch to step down in the wake of Michael Brown’s shooting death, was arrested in front of the Ferguson police station Monday night during another evening of protests.
According to a police spokesman, Nasheed joined protestors calling for justice in the death of the unarmed teenager at the hands of Officer Darren Wilson. She walked into the street after police instructed protestors not to do so. Nasheed was taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. and refused bond.
From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson said Nasheed was facing two charges and being held in lieu of $600 bail at the St. Ann jail.
Attorney Eric Vickers said later Monday that he represents Nasheed and that she refused bond. He also seemed to confirm that her arrest was intentional.
“She wants to present this as an alternative to any sort of violent action,” Vickers said, referring to the potential for violence if a grand jury fails to indict the Ferguson police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown in August.
As of Tuesday morning, Nasheed was still in jail. Her bond remains unpaid.
.@SenatorNasheed is refusing bond. She will be staying the night in jail. Her chief of staff calls it an act of civil disobedience.
