Dear White People had a soft opening last week in just eleven theaters, but has already garnered a ton of buzz.

As the satire geared up for a national release, star Tessa Thompson and director Justin Simien stopped by the No Judgment Zone with BlogXilla to talk about the film and its message.

Dear White People takes a close look at race, following the story of a predominantly white university where activist and head of traditionally black residence hall, Samantha White, sets up a college campus culture war that challenges conventional notions of what it means to be black.

The film takes some swipes at the types of black movies Hollywood typically releases, so we asked Tessa about some of the lines teasing Tyler Perry, and her answer was amazing:

“The thing that’s problematic about Tyler Perry movies is if people think that’s the total sum of the black experience, and those are the only kind of stories that Hollywood allows for, then that becomes problematic. But that isn’t Tyler Perry’s problem, that’s a systemic issue. I think hopefully if this film does well, we can show Hollywood that frankly, there is a market for films like this, and we can allow other voices to come on the scene. So that to me was exciting to be a part of that.”
