Things aren’t looking good for “Blurred Lines” hit-makers Robin Thicke, Pharrell, and Clifford Harris (aka T.I.).
The “Blurred Lines” hit-makers have lost their first legal battle against the Marvin Gaye Family.
Marvin Gaye’s family sued singer Robin Thicke, collaborator Pharrell, and rapper T.I., accusing them of stealing the instrumental hook to “Blurred Lines.”
According to HypeTrak, Judge John Kronstadt has ruled in favor of the Gaye Family after a team of music experts proved that “elements of the smash hit reflected substantial similarities to Marvin’s song ‘Got to Give It Up’.”
Robin, Pharrell, and T.I. filed a countersuit against Bridgeport Music and Gaye’s family in attempt to protect themselves for copyright. Their lawsuit suggested that “being reminiscent of a ‘sound’ is not copyright infringement,” adding that the track was meant to pay homage to Gaye’s music.
The Gaye family declined Robin Thicke’s six-figure settlement.
The case has been going on for over a year and by the looks of it, it won’t be settled anytime soon. The trial’s continuation is set for February 10, 2015.
