A Denver police officer has been charged with second-degree murder after entering the home of Jack Jacquez (pictured above) and fatally shooting him last month.
According to The Denver Post, the incident occurred in October when Jacquez was returning home around 2 a.m. from helping a friend babysit. Officer James Ashby shot and killed the 27-year-old in the back. Jacquez was found by his fiance on the kitchen floor.
Ashby, who was an officer for five years and a Rocky Ford cop for five months, is currently being held on a $1 million bond.
Details are limited behind the officer’s arrest, but Jacquez’ father, Jack Jacquez Sr., says his son was a good man.
The father said his son, while not perfect, was not a bad man and didn’t deserve to be killed.
“He dressed real cool,” Jacquez Sr. said. “He liked the throwback jerseys and cool caps. He was real clean and nice-looking. He dressed like a gangster but he wasn’t one…I’m relieved we are getting some justice and this hasn’t been swept under the table.”
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Otero County Sheriff’s Office, and the Colorado State Patrol were all part of the investigation, but the victim’s father says he hasn’t heard any updates or details behind the officer’s arrest.
“Nobody official has talked to me at all,” he said.
Ashby will appear in court on Wednesday for the charges presented.
