A three-year-old boy in Tulsa, Okla. shot and killed his mother with a semi-automatic handgun on Monday evening. The woman was at home with the toddler and one-year-old daughter when her son grabbed the handgun from under the couch and fired one shot at his mother. The woman was transported to a Tulsa hospital, where she was pronounced dead. [KJRH]
Police brutality in Utah has claimed more lives than gangs, drugs, and child abuse combined in the past five years. Nearly 300 homicides show police brutality is the second-most common result of death in the state. This year alone, 13 killings, including a shooting on Saturday in South Jordan for trespassing, were committed by police. [SLTRIB]
Just before the grand jury announcement in the case of Officer Darren Wilson, a woman accidentally shot herself with a gun she bought in preparation for Ferguson unrest. The shooting occurred Friday night in the downtown area of St. Louis, an area surrounded by vacant lots. The woman, Becca Campbell, was sitting in the passenger seat of a car driven by her boyfriend when he rear-ended another vehicle. The boyfriend said the accident caused the gun to go off, and Campbell was struck by a bullet in the head. [CNN]
A 9-year-old in Brooklyn, New York was accidentally shot by her father as he was cleaning his gun. Pedro Rosales was cleaning his gun when it fired accidentally, striking his daughter in the hip. Mr. Rosales was charged with assault, reckless endangerment, acting in a manner injurious to a child, and criminal possession of a weapon. The girl is expected to survive. [NY Times]
