The senior Republican staffer who took to Facebook to criticize President Obama’s daughters for lacking “class,” telling the two teenage girls to “dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar,” has resigned following backlash for the post.

Elizabeth Lauten, who worked as the communications director for Republican Rep. Stephen Fincher of Tennessee, posted this rant on Facebook after watching 16-year-old Malia and 13-year-old Sasha just acting and dressing like regular teenagers do during the annual White House turkey pardoning ceremony:

Dear Sasha and Malia, I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play. Then again your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the ‘good role model’ department. Nevertheless, stretch yourself. Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly don’t make faces during televised public events.

Hours later, she removed her comments and issued an apology. It proved futile — Monday marked Lauten’s last day.

Lesson to all — children are off-limits. So are angst-ridden teenagers who have dads with silly dad jokes about pardoning turkeys. Let those two beautiful girls live their lives and keep the scrutiny to yourselves.
