On Thursday evening, celebrities stepped out to attend GQ magazine’s annual Men of the Year Party at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. But nationwide, thousands of Americans participated in protests following the Staten Island grand jury’s decision on Wednesday not to indict the officer that strangled an unarmed black man to death.

Several celebrities have shared their disappointment in the decision, some even joining protesters on the street like J. ColeDave Chappelle, who was named Man of the Year by the men’s magazine, used his red carpet appearance at the party to make a political statement by raising his hands up in the air, a gesture against police violence emblematic of the case involving Mike Brown.

The St. Louis Rams and members of Congress have also recently raised their hands in silence and solidarity.
