The wife of slain NYPD cop Wenjian Liu said her husband was standing in for another cop when he was shot and killed on Saturday.

His widow Pei Xia Chen spoke to the media outside her Brooklyn home on Monday. She said her husband volunteered to fill in for another cop who was running late before he was shot in his patrol car by Ismaaiyl Brinsley.

“He wasn’t supposed to be there,” the source said.

Overwhelmed with emotion and fighting back tears, Chen said her husband’s dreams were to provide for his current and growing family. Chen said her family has been thankful for the support and offered her condolences to the family of Rafael Ramos, the other officer shot and killed on Saturday.

“This is a difficult time for both of our families, but we will stand together and get through this together,” she told the crowd.

Liu and Chen were only recently married in September. The couple was looking forward to starting a family of their own.

After majoring in accounting at The College of Staten Island, Liu joined the NYPD in 2007.

“He was an asset to the police department, using his Chinese language skills whenever and wherever it was needed,” read the statement.

Liu’s parents are reportedly distraught at losing their only son. Family members are receiving help from authorities so they can travel from China to attend the service. Funeral arrangements have yet to be determined.
