A three-year-old boy is lucky to be alive thanks to quick thinking by his family members and pedestrians during a huge fire.

According to WPTV, four families were left homeless on Christmas Day after a kitchen fire spread throughout an apartment complex in Birmingham, Alabama. Resident Kerry Jackson persuaded the child to jump into his cousin’s arms during the blaze. Another child was also saved by a fire fighter.

On the video, you can hear Jackson yelling for the child to jump. He caught the dramatic moments before firefighters arrived at the scene.

“I really didn’t have any emotion running through me at the time. It was just like, ‘I need him, we need him to jump,'” said Jackson.

Jackson, a photographer, said it was his instinct to grab his camera, but he didn’t know he’d be part of the story.

“Just to relive that moment and say that you saved someone’s life.  It’s just a really good feeling,” said Jackson.

The child was in fair condition at a local hospital. GoFundMe accounts have been created to help raise funds for the families who lost everything in the fire.
