George Zimmerman, the Florida man who threw a bottle at his ex-girlfriend according to a police report, is denying any wrongdoing in the incident that resulted in his arrest on aggravated assault charges.

But the woman, whose name was redacted, told police her former partner became angry, throwing a wine bottle at her after she tried to break up with him.

That woman, who was said to be in an “intimate relationship” with the man acquitted of murdering Trayvon Martin towards the end of last year, also told authorities that she should have known better than to get involved with him.

From the Associated Press:

Officers patrolling the neighborhood where Zimmerman lives last week heard the sound of glass shattering, and then saw the former girlfriend drive out of the driveway. They pulled her over for a traffic stop a few streets over because she didn’t have her lights on.

She explained that Zimmerman became angry after she told him she didn’t want to take the relationship further, and they also argued over a painting she had that he wanted returned. Zimmerman made threats and threw the wine bottle, which didn’t hit her, she said.

Detectives described her as “extremely emotional, crying, mad and upset” and said she became reluctant to cooperate when she realized that officers might be conducting an investigation. She called her former boyfriend “that psycho, George Zimmerman…”

“She indicated that this began at a time when she was emotionally vulnerable,” the report said.

Zimmerman, however, is telling a different story. The former neighborhood watch volunteer told police that he did not throw the bottle, disputing her claim that he destroyed her cell phone the week prior. He also said he was only trying to prevent her from entering his home.

He was arrested Friday at his home in Lake Mary after police knocked on his door for more than two hours. Police say they could hear a television and a dog barking. Eventually, Zimmerman came to the door and officers allowed him to keep his attorney on the phone during his initial interview.

He was released Saturday on a $5,000 bond.

This isn’t Zimmerman’s first run-in with the law or domestic violence dispute since he was tried for the killing of a black Florida teenager. Just months after his acquittal, Zimmerman was accused of smashing his estranged wife’s iPad during an argument. He has also been pulled over three times for traffic violations and was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, battery, and criminal mischief after his then-girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, said he pointed a gun at her face during an argument.
