A 13-year-old Minnesota boy died Sunday after his older brother shot him during a game of “cops and robbers.”

The child, identified as Eagan eighth-grader Suhayb Jamal Hassan, and his 15-year-old brother were playing with their father’s 9-millimeter pistol when the younger sibling was shot in the chest. Detective Desiree Schroepfer says the 15-year-old pressed the trigger and “unintentionally” fired the weapon at his brother.

The boys’ sister, 11, was at home at the time of the shooting, but was not injured.

“At some point, the firearm was loaded, then thought to be unloaded by one of the boys,” according to a police department news release.

The older brother, whose name has not been released, initially told police that his brother was running with a knife, when he fell and stabbed himself. But when police arrived on the scene, the teenager told the officers about the gun and the shooting.

“I believe at the time he was very scared because he knew he wasn’t supposed to be playing with the firearm. And he was concerned that he was going to get in trouble for that,” Schroepfer said.

First responders found Hassan, bleeding and unresponsive, around 11 a.m. and they were not able to save him.

“Anytime there is a loss of life of a young child, it’s tragic,” Schroepfer said. “And our hearts go out to the friends, family and community of this young individual.”

Although the shooting appears to be an accident, an investigation is still underway, police said in a news release. No one was arrested and police do not expect future arrests.
