Pharrell is known for being a pioneer in the game, and it’s no surprise when he pushes the envelope.

Tonight, the music giant was awarded the Best Pop Solo Performance for his hit single “Happy.” Right after that, he took his talents on stage to perform the hit – but it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies.

Pharrell added a little twist to the very bright single by recruiting gospel singers and violinists. In the midst of the performance, he paused for a second to pay tribute to the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” gesture, a symbol of the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. and the subsequent protests against police brutality and discrimination.

The Grammy winner also thanked God. Watch above and let us know what you think.
