A 17-year-old boy has died after shooting himself in a game of Russian roulette in the California apartment where he lived with his older brother and sister-in-law, authorities say.

Officials believe the unidentified teenager was playing the game early Monday with friends.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies responding to a call about a gunshot in an unincorporated area between Los Angeles and Carson found the boy with a wound to the head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy initiated the game after producing a .38-caliber revolver, despite the pleading of two others in the bedroom not to, according to sheriff’s investigators.

Family members in the apartment at the time of the shooting just after midnight told authorities they did not realize the teen had a gun.

Russian roulette, believed to be a widely known practice in 19th century Russia, is a game in which a player loads a single round into the chamber of a revolver, places the gun to their head, and pulls the trigger.

The teenager’s death has been ruled an accident.
