Former NFL Chicago Bears running back Adrian Peterson posted a heartfelt goodbye via Facebook to his 7-year-old son A.J., who lost his battle with brain cancer on Tuesday.

“#Ajsoars is in Heaven, where he belongs…#ajsoars #P3 #MyFirstSuperHero,” said Peterson about his little boy who was first diagnosed with the disease last June. Peterson and his wife, Angela were then informed that A.J. had an inoperable brainstem tumor or Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG).

Peterson — not to be confused with Minnesota Viking Adrian Peterson — announced on a GoFundMe page that A.J., the oldest of four children, was given a five to nine percent survival rate. The site raised close to $40,000 for the exorbitant medical costs.

And last month, A.J.’s dreams of becoming a police officer came true. The Make A Wish Foundation arranged for him to be sworn in as an honorary Round Lake Police officer.

HIs parents have been documenting the boy’s medical journey via Facebook, and have reportedly been comforted by the incredible outpouring of love from those who sympathize with their plight.

Peterson took to the Facebook page he set up for his boy to provide the details about A.J.’s homecoming services:

“Angela and Adrian are extremely appreciative for all of your thoughts and prayers. The Homegoing Celebration for A.J. will be held Saturday at 3pm at: Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church, 1365 Kinlaw Rd., Kingsland, GA 31548.”

May he rest in peace.
