On Sunday, a Rutgers University freshman collapsed and died during a basketball game at the Cook/Douglass Recreation Center in New Jersey, school officials said.

Lifeguards on duty at the center immediately began CPR on Patrick Awosogba when he collapsed around 2:00 p.m. Rutgers EMTs arrived to administer electronic defibrillation and the 18-year-old was rushed to the hospital. By 3:15 p.m., the teenager was pronounced dead.

From NJ:

Awosogba was a 2014 East Brunswick High School graduate who played as a reserve outfielder on the township’s 214 Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division championship baseball team.

“He was a great kid,” said Christopher Yannazzo, supervisor of athletics at East Brunswick High School. “He was a consummate team player. He worked hard. He did his job.”

According to Patrick’s sister Temipope, who is also a resident physician in Boston, the family suspects that hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, also known as an enlarged heart, contributed to his death. No foul play is suspected.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Patrick’s family during this difficult time.
