Kendrick Lamar has been making some big noise with his new album To Pimp A Butterfly, and not as much on the media front, but he’s ready to talk and break things down.

The TDE rapper sat down with MTV’s Rob Markman for a lengthy intimate interview, and the two discussed a slew of essential topics, including the origin of his album title.

It turns out that K. Dot originally wanted to call his album Tu Pimp A Caterpillar, which would be a tribute to Tupac, as the abbreviation spells his name.

He told the host:

“That was the original name and they caught it because the abbreviation was Tupac, Tu-P-A-C.”

He then revealed why he changed the title before the project’s release, and used “butterfly” instead of “caterpillar,” explaining:

“Me changing it to Butterfly, I just really wanted to show the brightness of life and the word pimp has so much aggression and that represents several things,” he explained. “For me, it represents using my celebrity for good. Another reason is, not being pimped by the industry through my celebrity.”

Kendrick also discusses the recording process behind the album, and why it was so delayed:

“You’re grabbing all these different experiences around the world and all these conversation pieces — you almost have to reenact that because the time I got inspiration I probably was on the road,” he said, saying that he always had the TPAB concept even if he didn’t have the album name. “I knew that was going to be the concept, I didn’t know if that was going to be the title.”
