Over the past few decades, the city of Oakland has given us so many great music artists.

From Sly and The Family Stone, Digital Underground, En Vogue and Tony! Toni! Toné! to E-40, Too $hort, MC Hammer, Keyshia Cole, and so many more, it’s no surprise the city also known as “Oak Town” would produce a vibrant young lady named Kehlani.

Kehlani got her start when she joined a cover band named PopLyfe that garnered notoriety when they appeared on NBC’s hit series America’s Got Talent. Although the band quickly became America’s favorite, when production for the show ended, Kehlani decided she wanted to become a solo artist and only bring one person from the show along for the ride – Nick Cannon.

At the time, Nick Cannon was hosting the hit series and a year after Kehlani and her band graced the stage, he gave her a phone call. Since then, Nick became the 19-year-old songstress’s biggest supporter.

On the heels of her “Down For You” collaboration with BJ The Chicago Kid, Kehlani stopped by GlobalGrind’s offices to discuss her forthcoming new project You Should Be Here, growing up in tough circumstances, Nick Cannon being her mentor, and the meaning behind all of her tattoos.

You Should Be Here is scheduled to drop April 28. Watch our exclusive interview with Kehlani up top.
