A 17-year-old died after a 911 dispatcher hung up on the teen trying to save his life, FOX News reports.

Seventeen-year-old Jaydon Chavez-Silver was hanging out with several friends, including Esperanza Quintero, 17, at a house party in Northeast Albuquerque, New Mexico back in June. While playing cards in the kitchen, bullets from a drive-by shooting entered the home, with one hitting Chavez-Silver.

Quintero called 911 and was placed on the line with Matthew Sanchez, a 10-year veteran of the Albuquerque Fire Department. As she tried to administer CPR to Chavez-Silver, Sanchez repeatedly inquired about his status. Then, things went from bad to worse.

An except from the 911 call revealed the short encounter:

Caller: (inaudible) I’m keeping him alive.

Sanchez:  Is he not breathing?

Caller: Barely.  (inaudible) Stay with me. Stay with me, okay? Good job, Jaydon.

Sanchez: Is he breathing?

Caller: He’s barely breathing. How many times do I have to f—ing tell you?

Sanchez: Okay, do you know what ma’am? You can deal with it yourself. I’m not going to deal with this, okay?

Caller: No, he’s going to die.

Chavez-Silver died at a nearby hospital. Sanchez was initially reassigned to another department after the call was made public, but resigned shortly after Chief Administrative Officer Rob Perry launched an investigation into the incident on Tuesday.

Quintero says she regrets cursing at the now-former dispatch caller, but didn’t know what to do in the situation.

“It was his job. I don’t understand why he would have hung up,” Quintero said in an interview with KOAT-TV on Tuesday. “I was frantic. I was scared. I’m only 17. I didn’t know how to handle the situation. I did the best I could. I tried to stay calm.”

Chavez-Silver’s mother says she heard the call for the first time on Monday. For now, she’s focused on finding those responsible for the shooting.

Police have yet to find any leads.
