Our society has become accustomed to labeling people based on their sexuality, and Kristen Stewart has had enough of it.

Stewart’s sexuality has been the talk of the tabloids for quite some time now, though the infamously shy actress has never really addressed it. Until now, that is. After widespread speculation and chatter, Stewart finally spoke up about her view on sexuality in Nylon‘s newest cover story, featured in the September issue.

Stewart, who claimed her name to fame when she first joined the Twilight series six years ago, starting dating co-star Robert Pattinson about a year after filming began on the Twilight Saga. Their real relationship took on a role of its own, carrying just as much weight off-screen as Bella and Edward’s did in theaters. They became the most intriguing, mysterious couple in Hollywood… until they weren’t. After Stewart and Pattinson parted ways, rumors quickly circulated that the edgy young actress had started up a relationship with visual effects producer and close friend, Alicia Cargile. To this day, Stewart has yet to confirm that the rumor is true, but she’s certainly not denying it, either.

When Stewart sat down for her Nylon interview, she spoke about not only her own sexuality, but human sexuality as a whole. On the matter of her own sexual preferences, the gutsy young actress said, “Google me, I’m not hiding.”

Stewart then added:

“I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight. It’s like, just do your thing.”

She spoke honestly about her experience as Bella in Twilight, the role that both kickstarted her career and also set her back in many ways. She says she’s excited for the future, to move past the past as a confident, capable, and calmer actress.

“Speaking very candidly, [the Twilight years were] a really traumatic period in my early twenties that kick-started something in me that was a bit more . . . feral. I’m really proud that I am able to move forward and not fall into every mental crater. That’s a new thing for me. Age has made me smarter and calmer. And it is f–king awesome.”

Age and experience has taught Stewart how to be who she is. She strongly believes that as individuals, we all have the right to define ourselves, and if we have the ability to articulate the parameters that define us, we should be able to do so. However, Stewart also says there is no rule book that states we have to be one way or the other, and people should not feel pressured to conform to societal standards.

Truthfully speaking, Stewart said:

“I am an actress, man. I live in the f–king ambiguity of this life and I love it. I don’t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ‘I’m coming out!’ No, I do a job. Until I decide that I’m starting a foundation or that I have some perspective or opinion that other people should be receiving… I don’t. I’m just a kid making movies.”

And just like that, the 25-year-old actress known for being painfully awkward made one of the most eloquent and important statements to date. You don’t have to label yourself as straight, gay, bisexual, or anything else. Just be you and let the world do the judging.
