The Black 18-year-old who was shot and killed by a White St. Louis police officer earlier this week died from a single gunshot wound to the back, an autopsy shows.

Mansur Ball-Bey died Wednesday — the one-year anniversary of Kajieme Powell’s death at the hands of police — when officers arrived at his aunt’s Fountain Park home to serve a search warrant. Police say two Black males ran from the home during the raid. Ball-Bey allegedly turned and pointed a gun at officers, prompting one of the cops to open fire, shooting four bullets.

His death sparked a night of protests and the deployment of officers in militarized gear in an area already high with racial tension.

Police Chief Sam Dotson said the location of the wound does not prove or disprove if Ball-Bey pointed a gun at officers, according to the St. Louis Dispatch.

“Just because he was shot in the back doesn’t mean he was running away,” Dotson said. “It could be, and I’m not saying that it doesn’t mean that. I just don’t know yet.

“What I do know is that two officers were involved and fired shots, but I don’t know exactly where they were standing yet and I won’t know until I get their statements.”

Investigators found fingerprints on the gun police say Ball-Bey possessed, but it’s not immediately clear if the prints belong to the teenager. His family believes the 18-year-old was unarmed when he was shot. “I told them, ‘If you want me to represent you, don’t lie to me. Did he have a gun?’ And they all said, ‘No,’” family attorney Jermaine Wooten told the Post-Dispatch.

A Force Investigation Unit that reviews all police killings in St. Louis is currently reviewing the case. We’ll keep you updated with the latest developments.
