Although African-Americans make up just 13 percent of the U.S. population, we account for 33 percent of the missing in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s database. Cases involving African-Americans also tend to receive less media coverage than missing Whites, with missing men of color getting even less attention.

NewsOne has partnered with the Black and Missing Foundation to focus on the crisis of missing African-Americans.

To be a part of the solution, NewsOne will profile missing persons and provide tips about how to keep your loved ones safe and what to do if someone goes missing.

Location Last Seen: Early morning hours at 2024 Barclay Place in Suffolk.

Circumstances of Disappearance: The 14-year-old left her mother a note on the morning she disappeared hinting that she would be in Florida.

“In a note Sanise left her mother the morning she disappeared, she alluded to the fact that if she needed to be contacted, you could look for her in Florida, but she never actually stated that she was going to Florida,” said a spokeswoman for Suffolk Police in a statement.

Sanise’s mother believes her daughter may have been lured into running away by someone who said they were a talent scout for models. Denise Allen told 10WAVY.com that her daughter had emailed with someone posing as a talent scout days before she disappeared. “I’m not really sure what enticed her, what was said or what was promised to get her to leave, because it’s not like her,” Allen told the station.

Allen intervened when she found out that her daughter was communicating with this individual and restricted her social media use, she told The Virginian-Pilot. She also warned Sanise about the dangers of communicating with strangers.

Suffolk Police representatives told NewsOne that contact with a person claiming to be a talent scout is one angle they are investigating.

“During the course of their investigation, police have reviewed multiple social media accounts and have been in contact with friends and followers of those accounts, but there has been no activity on those accounts since the day she went missing. Further, they have been in contact with local friends of the teen, as well as local and out-of-state family members,” added a spokeswoman for Suffolk Police in the statement.

Allen and police are especially worried because Sanise left home without her medications. Sanise had recent surgery for scoliosis and was also taking anti-depressants.

Suffolk Police say they have received more than 20 tips placing Sanise in restaurants, supermarkets, and other locations in states ranging from Virginia and North Carolina to Florida. “No one was ever seen accompanying the individual in the tips that have been received,” say Suffolk Police.

Police are especially interested in making contact with an anonymous caller from the evening of Monday, Aug. 17. “He did not leave contact information and his number was blocked,” so police “have no way of reaching him,” officials said. Law enforcement is encouraging the individual to call back so they can receive any information that may help them in their search for Sanise.

The Virginia State Police and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children issued an Endangered Missing Child Alert on Aug. 20.

Natalie Wilson, a co-founder, president and CEO of the Black and Missing Foundation, said the case highlights the importance of parents monitoring their children’s communications on electronic devices and on the Internet.

“Parents must not only understand the dangers lurking in cyber space, but must have a frank conversation with their children about it. Monitor what sites they visit,” said Wilson.

For now, all Allen can do is pray for her daughter’s safe return.

“Please come home,” she told the Virginian-Pilot. “We love you. Everyone’s worried. If you can call – collect if you have to – we just need to know you’re OK.”
