Although racism is a lingering problem within our country, many people believe it’s now one of the most pressing issues in society today. According to a new poll by CNN and the Kaiser Family Foundation, 49 percent of Americans believe that racism is a “big problem.” The percentage has seesawed over the past decade. In 1995, following the infamous O.J. Simpson trial, 41 percent of Americans said racism was an issue. Four years ago, just over a quarter of people polled agreed. “People may agree that racism is worse and disagree profoundly on who the targets and victims are,” said Mark Naison, a professor of history and African-American studies at Fordham University. “Latent racism is becoming more open, because a lot of people are feeling threatened. People are able to empathize, communicate and talk honestly across racial lines much better than they did five years ago, and certainly 10 years ago and 20 years ago.” Read more.

President Obama to be Sampled on Coldplay’s Album

President Obama will make his music debut on Coldplay’s upcoming album A Head Full of Dreams. The group will sample Barack’s rendition of “Amazing Grace,” which he performed at the funeral of Rev. Clementa Pinckney, who lost his life along with eight others during the massacre at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. “We have a tiny clip of the President singing ‘Amazing Grace’ at that church. Because of the historical significance of what he did and also that song being about, ‘I’m lost but now I’m found,’” said Coldplay singer Chris Martin. A source close to the group said President Obama is a huge fan. “Barack Obama wouldn’t let just anyone feature his vocals on the record, especially considering what a deeply emotional moment it was for him. But he clearly loves Coldplay and is happy to be a part of their music history,” they said. Other people featured on the album include Beyoncé, Tove Lo, and Noel Gallagher. Read more.

White Student Union Page at NYU Is Fake

Over the weekend, several “White Student Union” social media pages associated with some of the nation’s most prestigious universities were created, alarming many people. According to reports, many aren’t real. The White supremacist group Daily Stormer allegedly created the pages as a prank. A spokesperson for NYU, one of the schools affected, released a statement claiming the school has no connection to the page. “There is no such organization as this at NYU, the Facebook page is using NYU’s logo illegally and without permission, and we have contacted Facebook to demand the NYU logo be removed,” the statement reads. “We reject—and we call on others to reject—efforts such as this to derail or distort candid, thoughtful discourse on race,” he said.
