The 2015 Soul Train Music Awards brought the soul this year. With performances by Jill Scott, Tyrese, Jazmine Sullivan and more, our Sunday night was warmed with good music and good vibes.

Erykah Badu Shaded Iggy Azalea
If you’ve heard of #BaduBox, you most likely found humor in Erykah’s joke (during her opening monologue) about her failed relationships with rappers like Common and Andre 3000. Now every rapper wants to be her favorite (Nicki Minaj voice). Combined with the perfect setup, Erykah also slipped in a joke about Iggy Azalea not being considered a real rapper. Burn.
Gina & Pam Reunited
Martin fans were hype about this one. Gina and Pam Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold brought nostalgic realness while presenting the award for Best New Artist to Classic Man Jidenna.
Tyrese Was Sangin’
Tyrese may be one of those social media philosophers you mute on your timeline, but that boy can sang (and has a killer smile to match). He later won an award for his album, Black Rose.
Erykah Badu Performed ‘Tyrone’
After teasing her new song, “Phone Down,” Erykah performed her classic, “Tyrone.” Then she was joined by Tyrone!
Jill Scott Got The Recognition She Deserves
“The goal was to be there when you make that new baby,” Jill Scott said while accepting Soul Train Award’s inaugural Lady of Soul Award. She was regal. She was personable. She was flawless. JIlly from Philly ended her charming speech with this quote:
Celebrating 15 years in music, she performed a soulful medley of her classics and new joints.
The Soul Cypher
We were skeptical about this one when Erykah introduced the concept on the ones and twos. But Chrisette Michele, Jodeci frontman K-Ci, Lalah Hathaway and Eddie Levert delivered. Especially when K-Ci added his signature “ooh yah” in a “rift-off” with Eddie.
R. Kelly Is The King of R&B
It’s easy to lose sight of R. Kelly’s contributions to music with the sex scandal that surrounded his life and career. But every time he touches the stage, we’re reminded of his musical genius, and that remained the same at the Soul Train Awards. Man, he has some jams.
Erica Campbell Took Us To Church
How befitting on a Sunday night for a church blessing in the form of song.
The Babyface Tribute Was Everything
Centric producers got the Babyface tribute right. Babyface received the Soul Train Legend award and was honored by industry friends like Toni Braxton, L.A. Reid and Pebblez in a glowing video.
Then, the performances happened. Brandy hit us with “Sittin’ Up In My Room.” Fantasia delivered a rousing performance of Karyn White’s “Superwoman.” Then Boyz II Men floated to the stage on their voices. We were melting by the time they began “End Of The Road.”
Babyface brought it home with “Whip Appeal,” featuring the dancing styles of Laurieann “Boomkack” Gibson. We were basking in ’90s greatness.
