Athletes and superheroes can be one in the same. And with the year in sports women have enjoyed, it’s only right the year’s biggest female athletes get their Superwoman on.
Serena Williams, Carli Lloyd, Misty Copeland, and Ronda Rousey‘s superhuman efforts are finally being recognized as part of espnW and Marvel’s Super IMPACT 25 Heroes. Marvel artists have reimagined the year’s biggest athletes as larger than life figures who own the lane they thrive in. It’s safe to say this list is the definition of squad goals.
Serena Williams pummeled the competition in the French Open this year while she had the flu, and was ranked No. 1 in the world three times. To showcase her skills, Serena is rocking a tennis outfit reminiscent of Tron. Her superhero alter-ego is the Super Galactic Slam and even though she lost in the US Open, she’s still the most dominant tennis player in the world right now.
And who can forget Carli Lloyd? The New Jersey native became the second player to ever score a hat trick in a World Cup final, leading the U.S. to a 5-2 victory over Japan. That half field shot during the opening minutes of the game is enough to give her the nickname The Boss. Carli prides herself on her way of thinking, saying, “My mind-set throughout my career has been to focus on what I can control.” It’s only right she win FIFA’s award for the best player of the tournament.
And despite Ronda’s recent loss, her influence in the world of MMA has been unmatched. Let’s not forget she was the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in judo. And she’ll come back roaring with her next match scheduled in August against Bethe Correia.
Over the past year, Misty Copeland disrupted the world of ballet, and by pop culture’s standards, gave the sport a name. She landed the cover of Time, and was rightfully named principal dancer of the American ballet, making her the first African-American woman in the company’s 75-year history to hold such a prestigious title. Backed by athletic giant Under Armour, Misty represents the elegance and grace of the sport on and off the stage. It’s safe to say she’s on pointe.
