As the gun control debate rages on, another unfortunate incident proves that something needs to be done sooner rather than later.

Over the weekend, Richmond, Va. police arrested two men for the shooting death of 12-year-old Amiya Moses. Dwight Jackson and Shaquille Maxwell have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, according to the Richmond Police Department, per PEOPLE.

The firearm reportedly went off during a gun battle between the two men and the lone bullet struck Amiya, who was visiting a friend. She was then transported to a nearby hospital, but later died.

Neighbors said there’d been an altercation in the area after a car drove down the block and someone started shooting; Amiya was caught in the crossfire.

Her mother, Kele Wright, revealed to Fox 6 Now that she had just celebrated her daughter’s birthday on December 3. She said the moment she learned of her death, she could neither breathe nor talk, all because of someone else’s foolish actions.

I have to get ready to bury my 12-year-old daughter,” she said. “I have to put my daughter six feet under. It’s not worth it.”
