President Barack Obama gave his final State of the Union address Tuesday night and Americans were glued to their TVs, computer screens, and the most entertaining spot of them all – Twitter.
President Obama spoke calmly and at ease about some of his wins, highlighting the drop in unemployment, legalization of gay marriage, his landmark Affordable Care Act, and his fight against climate change. He shared that many of his strides took time and effort, but he was also critical of the issues the country has left to conquer after his tenure:
“But such progress is not inevitable. It is the result of choices we make together. And we face such choices right now. Will we respond to the changes of our time with fear, turning inward as a nation, and turning against each other as a people? Or will we face the future with confidence in who we are, what we stand for, and the incredible things we can do together?”
His words rang loud and clear to viewers with charts and iconic photos from his presidency (thanks to his partnership with music annotation site Genius) and even louder on Twitter. But we have to admit, some of Twitter’s comments focused on other gems of the night.
Needless to say, a serious evening turned hilarious in just seconds.
Poker faces from Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and many other Republican pundits prompted this response from Black Twitter:
There was also Obama’s boastful comments on the nation’s supreme power in the world.
Vice president Joe Biden and Ryan’s faces were also swapped for some of the best memes ever.
Biden-Obama love was all over the TL as well.
Of course, there were a few tweets that took aim at Obama’s speech, but no worries. Black Twitter had his back.
First Lady Michelle Obama was also celebrated. From her flawless makeup to her hair, FLOTUS was definitely in full bloom. There’s also the fact her Narciso Rodriguez-designed dress sold out on Neiman Marcus’ site in a matter of MINUTES.
In all, the SOTU went like this – don’t you agree?
