A mix of insensitive incidents of cultural appropriation have flooded the mainstream once again, with a Black model sounding off against racists shaming her lips and the British leg of MTV calling cornrows “boxer braids.”

The entanglement of incidents began last week when MAC posted a photo of Uganda model Aamito Stacie Lagum wearing the brand’s lipstick during an Ohne Titel runway show at Fashion Week.

The photo, which has since been taken down, was flooded with negative and racist comments about Lagum’s natural pout, BuzzFeed reports.

via BuzzFeed:

“The comment reads, “Black women will never be as beautiful as white women. The only argument blacks have is they have more melanin like that matters [crying emoji]. Yes white women can get injections and when they do, they are basically flawless. You don’t have any thing [sic] over them anymore and thats [sic] why you get so pissed off. Keep lying to yourselves thinking your dark asses look better. [crying emojis]. dont [sic] even come at me with the ‘all white features were first started by blacks’ Even if that was true, WHERE THEY AT THO? [100 emoji] Keep projecting your jealousy on white women though, Id [sic] rather be a cracker with injections than look like the majority of you oily yet ashy at the same time people. Acting like you don’t bleach your skins, get nosejobs, get contacts, and dye your hair blonde. [crying emoji, wave emoji].”

Another commenter came to the defense of women of color noting how praise and recognition only happens for ethnic features when White celebrities and models embody them.

via BuzzFeed:

This women’s lips are a beautiful heart shape. I can’t say the abundance of racist comments that were previously on here actually surprise me.

Black features are only considered beautiful when not actually on black women.

On Kylie Jenner, full lips are ‘innovative’ and ‘beautiful’ but on actual black women it’s gross and disgusting. The audacity of [the original commenter] (who’s clearly white) commenting ‘nigga lips [crying emoji]’ and getting away with blatant racism shows us how far we still have to come. I LOVE MY BLACKNESS AND YOURS [kiss emoji] xo.”

Lagum herself stepped forward and posted the perfect response on her Instagram page. The previous “Next Top Model Africa” winner boasted and bragged about her Blackness giving trolls “sleepless nights.”

Fan art soon followed:

Just a few days later, MTV UK posted a step-by-step tutorial on Twitter which showed how to sport cornrows, due to Kim Kardashian wearing them leading up to the recent Yeezy Season 3 fashion show. The site referred to the cornrows as “boxer braids” while paying no homage to Black people, who have plaited their hair for centuries.

The site writes, “Whether you’re off down the gym or need a casual but polished day to night style, meet your new favorite hairdo: boxer braids. The simple double Dutch braided style is having a total moment right now.”

Essence reports users decided to joke around with the outlet until the tweet was ultimately taken down. The how-to guide remains on the international site.

MTV and Viacom haven’t commented on the “boxer braid” debacle.
