While Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Anthony Mackie, and Kerry Washington showed up to the Oscars last night, most of Black Hollywood was in Flint, Mich. with famed directors Ava DuVernay and Ryan Coogler for their #JusticeForFlint benefit concert.
The Hannibal Buress-hosted event, which aired on Revolt TV, featured performances and appearances by Janelle Monaé, Andra Day, Ledisi, Robert Glasper, Vic Mensa, Musiq Soulchild, Jesse Williams, Jon Conner, Jussie Smollett, and Royce da 5’9.
Vic Mensa stopped his performance to speak about police brutality and the mistreatment of disenfranchised people.
“In Chicago recently, Laquan McDonald was shot 16 times by the police, shot on the ground while he was already dead. The biggest thing is they don’t respect our lives and that our lives have value, but we know we do and that’s why we’re here right now. I’m debuting this record it’s called ’16 Shots’,” he said.
Vic took jabs at the militarization of America’s police departments. “You can see it in their eyes they want to violate/ screaming out oink, oink, bang, bang, gang, gang gang, gang, murder, murder, murder their mind state,” Vic raps.
Vic Mensa’s currently readying his debut album Traffic, which is scheduled to drop later on this year. Watch his performance above.
