The Bachelor has never quite understood how to tackle race each season. But on last night’s The Bachelor: Women Tell All, the ABC show’s biggest skeleton in the closet could not be ignored.

This season, contestant Jubilee Sharpe, a Haitian American army sergeant, struck a chord in Bachelor Ben Higgins’ heart, but a nerve with the other women vying for the grand prize. During the season, the women would say they just “couldn’t see Jubilee as a soccer mom,” or just “didn’t see her with Ben,” and show teasers even pegged Jubilee as the “Queen Bee” of the season. But from what viewers witnessed, Jubilee pretty much stayed to herself and revealed cringe-worthy confessions that she felt unlovable, and probably wouldn’t have a real shot because didn’t look like anyone in the house.

On last night’s tell-all, biracial contestants slammed Jubilee for declaring that she was going to be the first “full Black” contestant to last in Bachelor history. They were offended by her use of the term. While Jubilee apologized, scores of fans on Twitter took the moment as another in a string of flat-out bullying. There is nothing derogatory about identifying as a “full Black” woman, especially when it’s completely acceptable to identify as being “half Black.”

While host Chris Harrison called Jubilee “complicated,” the self-deprecating contestant scored a superstar defense in comedian Amy Schumer.

We completely agree with Amy. A woman willing to be vulnerable enough to share her past and insecurities with a man who is very much into learning more about her is pretty awesome in our book. And if Harrison is pegging Jubilee for being complicated due to her race (the real complicated issue in Bachelor history), then it’s doubly not cool.
