This year’s March Madness is already going down in history.

Following their surprise win over Villanova to clinch the Big East championship, Seton Hall is going to the NCAA tournament for the first time in a decade, but that’s not the only reason why the University is in the headlines. Seton Hall Guard Derrick Gordon is the first openly gay player to compete in the tourney.

After he became the first Division 1 college basketball player to come out back in 2014, Gordon transferred to Seton Hall last year and joined the men’s basketball team. He’s since been celebrating the Pirates’ victories on social media.

USA Today reports that Gordon has declined interviews that focus on his sexuality in an effort to keep the conversation on the sport. Seton Hall’s head men’s basketball coach, Kevin Willard, said in August that Gordon’s sexuality is regarded as yesterday’s news amongst the team.

“For us, the fact that he’s gay is an old story. These kids know about Derrick, they’re on social media and are very informed. This generation of athletes are much more educated on the gay athlete. I think the attention is brought on by adults. We make it a bigger deal,” he said.

Major props to Derrick for having the courage to break new ground.
