Sandra Bland’s mother Geneva Reed-Veal delivered a powerful speech to Congressional leaders Thursday. “Am I angry, absolutely,” Reed-Veal said. “I’m not angry enough to create a riot where I burn things down, but I will create a riot, I will set off so that people will understand that this is real.” She has been fighting since last July to get to the bottom of her daughter’s death while in police custody, which has been ruled a suicide. A grandmother and her four grandchildren were killed amid heavy flooding in the east Texas town of Palestine, police said. The grandmother was 64 and the children were ages 6, 7, 8 and 9, according to Palestine Police Chief James Muniz.[NBC News]

Joseph C. Meek Jr., friend of mass murderer Dylann S. Roof, pleaded guilty to lying to federal officials and withholding knowledge about his friend’s involvement in the massacre of nine Black members Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina last June. The 21-year old repairman said Roof scouted the church for 6 months prior to the shooting with hopes of starting a race war. He faces 8 years in prison and up to $500,000 in fines. [New York Times]

The Dole Food Company, one of the largest makers of fresh produce, knew it had a listeria problem in one of its salad plants more than a year before it closed in January, according to a Food and Drug Administration report. The company’s produce was tested positive for listeria 9 times before government officials showed up to conduct their own inspections. 4 people have died and 33 have been hospitalized from the outbreak.
