Comedian Larry Wilmore caused a lot of controversy after using the “n-word” during his speech at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday night. Despite the negative backlash, the White House has come to his defense, saying President Obama “appreciated the spirit of Mr. Wilmore’s expressions on Saturday night.” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the context was not discriminatory. “Any comedian who’s signed up to follow President Obama at the White House correspondents’ dinner is assuming one of the most difficult tasks in comedy. Just by the nature of the engagement, that’s a tough job, following the president of the United States,” said Earnest. “It’s not the first time in the Monday after the correspondents’ dinner, that some people have observed that the comedian at the dinner crossed the line.” Read more.

Black New York Times Employees File Lawsuit Against the Publication

Racial discrimination within the realm of media is still an ongoing issue. Two African-American women recently filed a lawsuit against the New York Times, claiming the publication discriminates against employees based on race, age, and sex. The women, Marjorie Walker and Ernestine Grant, say the newspaper’s CEO Mark Thompson has implemented a policy that promotes “deplorable discrimination.” “The New York Times, widely touted as the “paper of record,” has been engaging in deplorable discrimination that has remained largely off the record. Unbeknownst to the world at large, not only does the Times have an ideal customer (young, white, wealthy), but also an ideal staffer (young, white, unencumbered with a family) to draw that purported ideal customer. In furtherance of these discriminatory goals, the Times has created a workplace rife with disparities,” reads the lawsuit. Read more.
