New Orleans Pelicans player Bryce Dejean-Jones, 23, was shot to death early Saturday in Dallas, with his agent saying it happened because the player mistakenly entered the wrong apartment.

The resident of said apartment told police he heard someone kicking down his front door, and when he called out to ask who it was, no one answered. When Bryce then kicked down the bedroom door of the apartment, the resident fired his gun. Bryce collapsed in the doorway, police said. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Bryce was in Dallas to visit his girlfriend for his daughter’s first birthday. It’s reported that the girlfriend lived in the apartment complex, and that the two had gotten into a heated argument shortly before the incident. Bryce went to take a walk to blow off some steam, and broke into the wrong apartment thinking he had been locked out.

“There is no information that suggests the deceased Bryce Dejean-Jones knew the apartment resident, or was armed as he entered the apartment,” police spokesman DeMarquis Black said in a statement.

“It is with deep sadness that the Pelicans organization acknowledges the sudden passing of Bryce Dejean-Jones,” his team said in a statement. “We are devastated at the loss of this young man’s life who had such a promising future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce’s family during this difficult time.”
