A$AP Rocky hasn’t exactly been eager to chime in about the controversial police shootings and social justice issues that plague Black America today. But perhaps now that will all change.

The Twitterverse happened to dig up A$AP Rocky’s interview with Time Out from last September, where the Harlem rapper didn’t have much to say about the shooting of Mike Brown in Ferguson or police brutality at large.

“I’m A$AP Rocky,” the 28-year-old told Time Out Magazine. “I did not sign up to be no political activist. I wanna talk about my motherfuckin’ lean, my best friend dying, the girls that come in and out of my life, the jiggy fashion that I wear, my new inspirations in drugs! I don’t wanna talk about no fucking Ferguson and shit because I don’t live over there! I live in fucking Soho and Beverly Hills. I can’t relate.”

After the interview randomly popped up, A$AP received one heck of a dragging on Twitter, forcing him to respond with a few tweets (some have since been deleted) saying his words were taken out of context. “If niggas wanna gas interviews from over a year ago, be my guest, all this social injustice makes me fukin sick, tho I’m still no politician,” he posted.

Since the old interview, it seems A$AP has already begun stepping up to do his part. He appeared in a PSA along with fellow celebs like Rihanna, Beyonce, Taraji P. Henson about the “23 Ways You Could Be Killed If You Are Black In America,” this week. Each celeb lists a reason 23 Black people have died from gun violence without cause in the past few years, such as, “Selling CD’s, outside of a supermarket,” or “Wearing a hoodie.”

Do you think the internet is overreacting to A$AP’s old interview, or did he really deserve the backlash? Sound off in the comments below.
