The man who shot and killed three police officers and injured three more in Baton Rouge on Sunday morning has now been identified by police as 29-year-old Kansas City native Gavin Long.

Long, who decided to carry out the murderous spree on his birthday, was an ex-Marine who has now been tied to an anti-government organization called the New Freedom Group. He apparently traveled to Louisiana from his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri to commit the deadly act and was killed by police after the shooting erupted.

According to CNN Baton Rouge police responded to a call of a “suspicious person walking down Airline Highway with an assault rifle.” When police arrived at the scene Long opened fire. It is believe that there were up to two accomplices who have not yet been captured, Baton Rouge PD tweeted to their followers to contact them immediately if they should see any suspicious behavior.

This is a tragic, and senseless killing of officers which will surely only add to the tension and anger within the Baton Rouge community since the police killing of Alton Sterling on July 5th.
