Social media has been on fire following Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Fans have been commenting on everything from Beyoncé‘s performance, to Rihanna‘s outfits, to Alicia Keys‘ decision to go makeup-free at the ceremony. Some praised the “Girl On Fire” singer for confidently rocking her au naturel look, while others had a lot of criticism for her choice.

But Swizz Beatz wasn’t here for the slander of his wife. He took to Instagram to address some of the comments and defend Alicia’s decision to be pretty and plain:

“This is deep. Somebody sitting home mad because somebody didn’t wear makeup on their face. Not your face, but they didn’t put makeup on their face because they just didn’t feel like wearing makeup. But you mad because that person didn’t put on makeup to please you? Type of shit is this? Cause you can do whatever you wanna do. She didn’t tell y’all don’t wear no makeup.”

Alicia explained her choice not to wear makeup in a powerful essay for online newsletter Lenny, in which she discussed the pressure women face to uphold beauty standards.

We think she looks amazing!
