President Obama eulogized civil rights pioneer Dorothy Height this morning. He went on to say that she was a force for both equality as well as justice and that she deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and W.E.B Dubois. President Obama also stated that Ms. Height deserved a place in both our hearts as well as in our history books.
There were many participants who paid tribute to Ms. Height in the ceremony they include: Gospel great Bebe Winans as well as harpists Jeff Majors, Rev, Vashti McKenzie, and a host of others.
Earlier this week Bishop T.D. Jakes released a statement: Ms. Dorothy Height was more than a wonderful person; she was a leader, a vanguard and a driving force behind social justice, equal rights and quality education. The world has truly lost an iconic African American and I am very saddened by her death. Though Ms. Height has passed, she will forever remain a symbol of greatness, and she will always be an inspiration to many.
As the leaders of the Civil Rights Era begin to gradually dim their lights it leads one to wonder about the leaders of tomorrow. I want to personally challenge each and every one of you to be the leaders of tomorrow today because a new era is on the horizon as the journey continues for us all.
