Yesterday kicked off the annual New York Knicks Poetry Slam competition. Over 20,000 high school students took part in a college fair and a poetry competition at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. Each year this the Knicks and partner Urban Word team up to provide high education opportunities for high schoolers on their way to college. The program is split up into two parts, Spoken Word and Written, participants can performa their poetry live or submit their poems online for a chance to win over $450,000 in scholarship money. GlobalGrind got the chance to chat it up with former Knicks guard John Starks, Michael Cirelli, executive director of Urban Word, and one of the founding members of this program Karen Buchholz.
