It’s pretty hard to list the things we wouldn’t do in order to save a loved one.

The movie Getaway tells the story of a man who has to find his kidnapped wife by going through a series of deadly demands in a car while speeding through Bulgaria.

While there’s plenty of action in the film itself, stars Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke basically spent their time on-screen all in one location…the car.

With what seems like hundreds of crashes and casualties, the movie will leave you on the edge of your seat wondering how could this all really happen?

We got a chance to talk to Selena and Ethan about shooting the movie in a car, their first vehicles, and what it was like for Selena to get in the car with Ethan for the first time.

Check out the interview below!

GlobalGrind: What was it like being in that one car for the entire shoot?

Ethan: The problem was that it was the middle of the night, so it was cold.

Selena: We actually liked being in the car. Well, I liked being in the car.

Ethan: It was warmer than anywhere else when you were in the car under the lights.

Selena: I think what was good though was we actually ran a lot before we got in the car, so we could actually physically walk around and do the scene over and over again. So it kind of seemed fresh getting in the car. It got too much sometimes doing it over and over again, so it was nice to step out.

Selena, your character is a bit rebellious. Have you ever had a rebellious phase in your youth?

Selena: Am I still in my youth? [laughs] I hope I am! I think it was really fun for me to pretend to know about cars and technology, because I know nothing about that. So I actually did get to learn about it. As far as being like that in my real life, I don’t know. I stole a chapstick when I was 7 at a store.

Ethan: I don’t know if that qualifies.

Selena: I don’t know!

Since this movie takes place in a car, could you tell us about your very first car? How has your driving either improved or gotten worse?

Ethan: My first car was kind of sad. It was when my parents had completely worn out their Corolla that they had for 16 years. They gave me it for my 19th birthday and it was just a really ancient Toyota. In fact, I loved it! I thought it was amazing, and I even drove it across country. The thing about it is that it was not aesthetically appealing. It was not fast, but it lasted forever. I drove across country and back, and then I gave it to my sister, who then drove it for another 10 years. I’m representing for Toyota!

Selena: Mine is pretty sad too. I got my first car when I was 16, but I didn’t have a license. It was a Ford Escape and I just let it sit there for 2 years because I enjoyed having my mom drive me. So when I was 18 I finally got my license and then I drove it. I’ve been driving it ever since this year, so I’ve had that car for forever. My driving has not improved. I don’t drive that well. I’m slow and I try to be safe since I live in Los Angeles, which is crazy.

What was it like when you guys first drove in the car together?

Selena: I was scared when Ethan drove the first day of rehearsals. It was terrifying.

Ethan: They took us out to an airport where they let us drive as fast as we wanted.

Selena: I didn’t think he’d actually do it, but he was driving and doing freakin’ donuts around the lot. I just thought, “we haven’t even started filming and I’m gonna die.” It was fun.

Ethan: It’ll make a good story!

Selena: He told me he didn’t know how to drive. He goes “I’ve never done this before,” but he did! So he was just making me even more scared.
