A 1-year-old girl and her 18-year-old babysitter were shot in New Orleans on Thursday night. The baby, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The teenager is in stable condition.

According to NBC:

The teenager, whom police described as the child’s caretaker, was walking with the baby just before 8:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. ET) on the 2800 block of South Saratoga Street when gunfire erupted, police said. After she and the baby girl were both shot, the wounded teenager ran into a residence and the people living there called police.

Superintendent Ronal Serpas said of the two unknown men believed to be responsible: “These men took a baby’s life tonight, and wounded a young woman. They don’t deserve to walk freely among the people of New Orleans. They must answer for what they’ve done.

“When these men opened fire, it was still early, and people were still out and about in the neighborhood. We need people to come forward, and tell us what they know.”

Police are still investigating the crime. They have questioned three people so far.

Our prayers and thoughts are with the baby’s family at this time.
