A woman in West Phoenix was fatally injured when she hugged her boyfriend and the gun in his pants accidentally discharged.

Police say the 24-year-old hugged her 18-year-old boyfriend and felt the gun in his waistband. When she complained that it was making her uncomfortable, the teen reached for the gun to pull it out of the way.

That’s when the weapon went off. A bullet struck the woman and she was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The police have not released her identity.

According to Phoenix police, the shooting appears to be accidental. Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the case will still be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for further investigation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.
