The government shutdown has put a damper on basically everything. National parks are shut down, monuments are closed and a lot of government-based services are no longer up and running. But tourists and workers aren’t the only people being affected by the shut down…numerous people have even had to put a hold on their plans to get married.

Comedy news anchor Stephen Colbert got wind of this and decided to do his part to help one lucky couple.

Mike Cassesso and his bride-to-be planned to tie the knot at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C., the site of their first date. Unfortunately the memorial is currently closed, so they were told they’d have to cancel their big day. That is, until Colbert came to the rescue!

“Well, Nation,” he said. “I promised you on the night of the shutdown that as leader of the Colbert Nation and Earl Lord of the Afterscape, I would provide all canceled government services, and that includes weddings.”

The couple flew out to New York and were married by Colbert on national television in what may be the most epic wedding ever. Check out the clip up top!
