Although it’s a new year, it hasn’t started off so wonderful for one family in Sacramento.

This past Sunday, tragedy struck as a 5-year-old girl was found dead in her home after a freak accident where she was left hanging.

According to CBS Local, her grandmother, Moang Saelee, told the story of how she found her granddaughter in their living room with a rope that had a hook meant for plants to hang on the ceiling around her neck.

The site reports that Saelee admitted she was not home during the time of the incident, and doesn’t believe that she meant to hurt herself.

She told the site:

“We don’t know how,” she said. “I’m not home, it’s just my daughter home and her auntie home, but her auntie in the bathroom and talk on the phone.”

A neighbor told the site of how they saw the kids left home alone often:

We had some concerns, especially through the summertime, the kids were out unsupervised often,” the neighbor said. “A couple of months ago, the same girl supposedly went missing, the police were out and then they found her under the bed later.”

Sacramento Police say homicide detectives are set to make sure this really was a freak accident, and are also investigating if Krista was properly being cared for.
